The hot talks in town revolves around the ability of TiVo unit to copy the on going live shows but some fear that the said feature will be tarnished, soon leaving the viewer to watch creepy shows and silly brouhaha of companies choices.

Macrovision policy:

Those devastating moves are originally forced by Macrovision, a company that creates the technology to protect movie and television content. The copyrights protection proposed by Macrovision applies to certain limited categories of program (such as pay per view, video on demand, DVD or VHS sources).

TiVo Scheme of Restrictions:

And a set pattern of rules to copy those programs are as follow:

  • Copy Never - This option disallows the user to copy the required content on their TiVo units.
  • 7 Day Unlimited - This gives the user an opportunity to watch the recorded program as much times as he/she likes from the date of recording till the end of day seven.
  • 7 Day / 24 Hours- You can watch the program within 24 hour time once you begin watching. It can be stored for seven days only.
The program provider either satellite or cable operators will decide which program will have Macrovision copyright protection and in other words it is between copyright holders(cable or satellite operators) and Macrovision.

Hollywood and NFL Stance:

The above mentioned will surely hamstring the TiVo’s business and this is not the least user are about to face regarding there blissful experience of recording program for later viewing. Another controversy is also generated at Hollywood front aided by NFL (National football league). Hollywood and national football leagues are touched by the consumer friendly approach of TiVo Inc, which is in favor of its precious user, who is more than willing to watch their favorite shows even outside their homes. In a filing with the Federal Communication commission, the organization force TiVo’s technology to implement the copyrights of shows. The most feared consequence of which is peer to peer sharing over the World Wide Web.

TiVo Networking and Copyrights:

With the advent of more advance features like DVD burners and home networking the battle of copyrights is modifying its shape. Networking is possible between laptops and home personal computers and famously known TiVo ToGo series, although laptops and desktop computers are registered with TiVo inc and share encoding and decoding technology that prevent viewing over non registered devices but Hollywood front is skeptic of TiVo’s move.

Conclusion:

TiVo is trying to balance the demands of its opponents and is bargaining for user’s rights by implementing new technology which will safeguards Hollywood concerns and user’s demands.
