Channel 4 launches HD channel

A high definition simulcast of Channel 4 has launched on Sky.

Channel 4 HD is available on channel 140 and will show high definition versions of the channel's programming where available. At launch, this includes Ugly Betty, "classic and contemporary movies", and music events including The Scissor Sisters and Keane live in concert. The first non-upscaled programme to go out today in high definition will be Happy Gilmore, the 1996 film starring Adam Sandler, at 10pm.

From the Spring, Hollyoaks will also be broadcast in high definition.

"Channel 4's mission is to innovate and provide its high quality programming across all platforms in formats that consumers want," said Rod Henwood, director of new business at Channel 4. "By launching the UK's first terrestrial simulcast service, we are living up to our reputation as an innovator in television and providing a unique service to our viewers."

Channel 4 HD is available without an additional subscription to viewers who have a Sky HD box and an active Sky viewing card.

"With HD channels from both the BBC and Channel 4 now available on Sky’s market leading HD platform, high definition is set to become the must-have TV format of the 21st century," said Stephen Van Rooyen, director of advanced TV products at Sky.
