BBC Alba, a new Gaelic-language digital television service for Scotland, will launch next month.

Test transmissions for the service, a partnership between the Gaelic Media Service and the BBC, began on digital satellite on July 30, and on-air trails are now confirming September 19 as the channel's official launch date. It will commence full service at 9pm.

"The launch of BBC Alba is a wonderful milestone for broadcasting," said Gaelic Media Service (MG Alba) chairman Alasdair Morrison. "The most important priority for MG Alba is that viewers and listeners receive high quality television, radio and online services, and I'm delighted that we are establishing this new service through the historic collaboration between MG Alba and the BBC."

The channel will be available on satellite and cable across the UK, and will appear on Freeview in Scotland after digital switchover, subject to BBC Trust approval.
